The foamy world of constructions

Ingrid Bredholt x Varier Furniture Ekstrem Foam 5.jpg

Foam is an interesting material. It’s soft and at the same time consistent. It comes in hundreds of variations. Foam is a strong and lightweight material that is easily cut with a sharp knife. It is commonly used within construction work, upholstery and fashion.

Ekstrem is made by foam sprayed into its tubular shape concealing a steel frame. The foam shape is later covered by the knitted “sock” Ekstrem is so well known for. This Ekstrem never got that far, but got stuck in its construction state. It is one of few chairs in the collection, so far, where the original shape is changed drastically. Yet being its highly recognisable self.

The chair is sculpted and manipulated like a body form, reminiscing the padding found in racing jackets. It is made from left over foam donated from Norwegian small and local upholsterers. These upholsterer shops are on the verge of extinction. Most people buy new furniture, almost no one mends the old.

The Ekstrem™ Spuma is soft yet firm to sit on. It encourages even weirder sitting positions.
